Our Story
AfriWidget was founded on a straightforward but urgent observation: in much of Africa and the developing world, access to personalised, high-quality guidance in health, finance, and education remains a privilege rather than a right. A student in Lagos has no affordable GPA tracking tool. A family in Nairobi has no free way to calculate whether their savings plan will cover their children's university fees. A young professional in Accra has no clinical-grade BMI and nutrition calculator designed with their context in mind.
We built AfriWidget to change that. Our platform is a collection of free, browser-based, AI-enhanced tools that make calculations and practical explanations available to anyone, anywhere, on any device. Most results are calculated locally; Finance and Education tools can add Groq-powered insight through a secure proxy when the deployed AI service is available. No sign-up and no fee are required, and we do not maintain a database of calculator submissions.
The name "AfriWidget" reflects our identity: rooted in Africa, but universally applicable. "Widget" speaks to our philosophy of building small, focused, powerful tools — each one purpose-built to solve a real problem in a specific domain.

AfriWidget's mission is to democratise access to intelligent, data-driven decision support for people across Africa and the developing world. We believe that every individual — regardless of geography, income level, or educational background — deserves access to the same quality of analytical tools that drive better decisions in wealthier parts of the world.
We pursue this mission through three principles: accessibility (our tools work on low-end devices and slow connections), privacy (all computations happen locally in your browser — we never touch your data), and accuracy (we use internationally validated formulas and clinical standards so you can trust the results).

Our Values
Privacy is Non-Negotiable
We believe your health data, financial figures, and academic records are deeply personal. Calculations run locally, while Finance and Education AI insight requests use only the relevant calculation context through a secure proxy. We have no accounts, do not maintain a calculator-submission database, and do not use calculator inputs for advertising targeting.
Accessibility Over Everything
Our tools are built as lightweight, fast-loading static HTML pages. They work on 2G connections, older Android phones, and basic browsers. We refuse to let technical barriers exclude the people who need our tools most.
Scientific Rigour, Plain Language
We use internationally validated, peer-reviewed formulas and clinical standards. But we translate results into plain, actionable language — because knowing your BMI number is only useful if you understand what it means and what to do about it.
Free Forever
AfriWidget will always be free. We sustain the platform through non-intrusive advertising and are committed to never introducing paywalls, subscription tiers, or premium features that restrict access to our core tools.
Looking Ahead
How We Build Trust
Trust is also about explaining what a result can and cannot say. A calculator should show its inputs, describe the method in ordinary language, and make uncertainty visible. That is especially important for health guidance and admissions estimates, where a number can be useful for preparation but cannot replace a clinician, school, examination board, or official institution. We aim to make those boundaries visible beside the tool rather than hiding them in fine print.
We also treat feedback as part of the product. When a visitor reports an unclear label, a broken link, an outdated rule, or an accessibility barrier, that report helps us decide what deserves attention next. Our goal is not to create the largest possible collection of widgets; it is to make each page understandable enough that someone can use it confidently on a phone, revisit the result, and know when to verify it elsewhere.
AfriWidget is still growing. Our roadmap includes expanded health tools covering nutrition tracking, diabetes risk calculators, and blood pressure monitoring guides; finance tools addressing loan amortisation, retirement planning, and currency-aware investment modelling for African markets; and education tools including study schedule optimisers, scholarship eligibility checkers, and university admission requirement databases for African institutions.
We are also committed to expanding our language support, with plans to offer content and interfaces in Swahili, French, Hausa, Amharic, and other widely spoken African languages, ensuring our tools reach the widest possible audience across the continent's extraordinary linguistic diversity.
