Matric SBA + Final Exam Pass Calculator (South Africa)

Calculate your National Senior Certificate (NSC) final Matric marks combining School-Based Assessment (SBA 25%) and final examination marks (75%) across 7 subjects with official Bachelor's, Diploma, and Higher Certificate pass classifications.

About the Matric SBA + Final Exam Pass Calculator

The National Senior Certificate (NSC), commonly known as Matric, is South Africa's benchmark high school graduation qualification. Under the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Umalusi certification guidelines, your final grade 12 subject marks are not determined solely by the final end-of-year November examinations.

Instead, every academic subject combines two crucial components:

  1. School-Based Assessment (SBA): Continuous term tests, practical assignments, projects, and preliminary (trial) examinations conducted throughout the Grade 12 year, weighting 25% of your final mark.
  2. Final National Examination: The external national examination written in October/November, weighting 75% of your final mark.
  3. Life Orientation: Assessed 100% internally through Common Assessment Tasks (CAT) and school-based records.

This calculator computes your final percentage across all 7 subjects, determines your official Umalusi NSC Pass Classification (Bachelor's Degree, Diploma, Higher Certificate, or NSC Endorsement), and calculates your Admission Point Score (APS) for tertiary applications.

Official Umalusi & DBE Matric Pass Levels

To qualify for an official National Senior Certificate, candidates must register for a minimum of 7 subjects and meet one of the following official pass tiers:

1. Bachelor's Degree Pass (B.Degree Endorsement)

2. Diploma Pass (Dip)

3. Higher Certificate Pass (HC)

4. Senior Certificate Pass (NSC Standard Pass)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a strong SBA mark save a poor exam mark?

Yes, up to a mathematical limit. Because the SBA counts for 25% of your total grade, an SBA score of 80% contributes 20 guaranteed points towards your final 100-point total. However, the final examination accounts for 75%, meaning exam preparation remains the dominant factor.

How is Life Orientation calculated in Matric?

Unlike other subjects, Life Orientation is assessed 100% through School-Based Assessment (SBA), physical education participation, and the national Common Assessment Task (CAT) written in September.

What is the difference between an NSC Bachelor's Pass and a University Acceptance?

A Bachelor's Pass is Umalusi's minimum statutory certification that qualifies you to apply for degree studies. Individual universities (such as UCT, Wits, UP, Stellenbosch) set their own specific Faculty Point Scores (APS cut-offs) and subject prerequisite percentages for competitive degrees.

Can I upgrade my Matric marks after receiving results?

Yes. Matriculants can register for the May/June NSC Supplementary & Second Chance examinations to rewrite subjects and boost their SBA and final percentages.
