About the Matric SBA + Final Exam Pass Calculator

The National Senior Certificate (NSC), commonly known as Matric, is South Africa's benchmark high school graduation qualification. Under the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Umalusi certification guidelines, your final grade 12 subject marks are not determined solely by the final end-of-year November examinations.

Instead, every academic subject combines two crucial components:

1. School-Based Assessment (SBA): Continuous term tests, practical assignments, projects, and preliminary (trial) examinations conducted throughout the Grade 12 year, weighting 25% of your final mark.
2. Final National Examination: The external national examination written in October/November, weighting 75% of your final mark.
3. Life Orientation: Assessed 100% internally through Common Assessment Tasks (CAT) and school-based records.

Official Umalusi & DBE Matric Pass Levels

To qualify for an official National Senior Certificate, candidates must register for a minimum of 7 subjects and meet one of the following official pass tiers:

1. Bachelor's Degree Pass (B.Degree Endorsement)

• Must pass Home Language at 40% or higher.
• Must achieve at least 50% (Level 4) in four designated high-credit subjects (excluding Life Orientation).
• Must achieve at least 30% (Level 2) in two other subjects.
• Must pass at least 6 out of 7 subjects.
• Unlocks: Admission eligibility for university undergraduate degree programmes (e.g., BSc, BCom, BA, LLB, BEng).

2. Diploma Pass (Dip)

• Must pass Home Language at 40% or higher.
• Must achieve at least 40% (Level 3) in four recognized subjects (excluding Life Orientation).
• Must achieve at least 30% (Level 2) in two other subjects.
• Must pass at least 6 out of 7 subjects.
• Unlocks: Direct admission to National Diploma and Technical Diploma programmes at Universities of Technology and TVET colleges.

3. Higher Certificate Pass (HC)

• Must pass Home Language at 40% or higher.
• Must achieve at least 40% (Level 3) in two recognized subjects.
• Must achieve at least 30% (Level 2) in three other subjects.
• Must pass at least 6 out of 7 subjects.
• Unlocks: Admission to Higher Certificate vocational programmes and N4 TVET colleges.

4. Senior Certificate Pass (NSC Standard Pass)

• Pass 3 subjects at 40% (including Home Language).
• Pass 2 subjects at 30%.
• Pass 1 subject at 20%+.

Mathematical Calculation Formulas

• Final Subject Percentage = (SBA Mark × 0.25) + (Final Exam Mark × 0.75)

Life Orientation Mark:

• Life Orientation Final Mark = 100% SBA & CAT Assessment Mark

NSC Level Scale Conversion:

• SBA portion = 68 × 0.25 = 17.0 points

Example 2: Full 7-Subject Bachelor's Pass Profile
