Unlike traditional schooling, obtaining an NC(V) certificate requires satisfying strict multi-tier assessment criteria. Each subject comprises an Internal Continuous Assessment (ICASS) component, an Integrated Summative Assessment Task (ISAT) for practical subjects, and a national external examination conducted by the DHET and certified by Umalusi.

Official DHET & Umalusi NC(V) Pass Criteria

To pass an NC(V) Level (Level 2, Level 3, or Level 4) and qualify for the national certificate, a candidate must register for and pass seven subjects (three fundamental subjects and four vocational subjects):

1. Fundamental Subjects (3 Subjects)

• Official Language (e.g., English First Additional Language): Minimum 40% final combined mark.
• Life Orientation: Minimum 40% final combined mark.
• Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy: Minimum 30% final combined mark.

Weighting for Fundamental Subjects: ICASS (Internal mark) counts 50%, and the National Final Examination counts 50%.

2. Vocational Subjects (4 Subjects)

• All 4 Vocational Subjects (Core & Elective): Minimum 50% final combined mark in EACH subject.

Weighting for Vocational Subjects:

• ICASS (Internal Continuous Assessment): 25%
• ISAT (Integrated Summative Assessment Task / Practical): 25%
• National External Examination: 50%

3. Sub-Minimum Examination Rules

• Students must obtain at least the prescribed sub-minimum examination mark in the national external exam to be credited.
• A failure in any single vocational subject means the full qualification certificate is withheld until the subject is passed in a supplementary or subsequent examination cycle.

Fundamental Subject Final Mark:

• Final Fundamental Mark = (ICASS Mark × 0.50) + (National Exam Mark × 0.50)

Vocational Subject Final Mark:

Overall Vocational Average:
