How the Uganda UCE (O-Level) Aggregate & Division System Works
The Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) is the Ordinary Level (O-Level) examination administered nationwide by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) at the completion of Senior Four (S.4). UCE results determine whether a student qualifies for Senior Five (S.5) Advanced Level (A-Level) subject combinations, primary teacher training, nursing certificates, technical polytechnic diplomas, or business certificates.
1. The Best-8 Subjects Rule
While candidates typically sit for 8, 9, or 10 subjects during their O-Level examinations, UNEB calculates overall performance using the Best 8 Subjects according to strict curricular rules:
- English Language (Compulsory): English is the national language of instruction and examination in Uganda. It must be included as Subject 1 in the Best-8 aggregate regardless of its score.
- Mathematics (Compulsory): General Mathematics is compulsory and must be included as Subject 2 in the Best-8 aggregate.
- Best 6 Remaining Subjects: The system evaluates all other entered subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, CRE/IRE, and vocational/language electives) and automatically selects the six (6) subjects with the lowest numerical point values (strongest grades).

3. UNEB Official Division Rules
- Division 1 (First Grade) – Aggregate 8 to 32: Requires an aggregate between 8 and 32, a pass in English (Grade 1–8), a pass in Mathematics, at least one Credit/Distinction (C6 or better) in a Science subject (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics), and at least 7 passes with Credits (C6 or better) in the best 8 subjects.
- Division 2 (Second Grade) – Aggregate 33 to 45: Requires at least 6 passes including credits (at least 4 credits and 2 passes). Candidates with an aggregate under 32 who miss the Science Credit or 7-credit threshold also receive Division 2.
- Division 3 (Third Grade) – Aggregate 46 to 58: Requires at least 5 passes or a minimum of 3 credits across subjects.
- Division 4 (Fourth Grade) – Aggregate 59 to 68: Requires at least 1 credit or 2 basic passes.
- Division 7 / 9 / U (Ungraded): Candidates with aggregate > 68 or fewer than 2 passes.
4. A-Level (UACE) Subject Combination Eligibility
Senior Five (S.5) admission committees in Uganda look closely at O-Level subject credits to award Principal combinations:
Pure Sciences & Mathematics (PCM, PCB, BCM, PEM)
Requires minimum Credit 6 (ideally D1–C4) in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, plus at least a Credit in English Language.
Economics, Mathematics & Geography (MEG, MEK, DEG)
Requires strong Credits in Mathematics, Geography, and Commerce/Entrepreneurship, plus a Pass in English.
Arts & Humanities (HEL, HEG, DEG, HED, BAF)
Requires Credits in History, Geography, Literature in English, CRE/IRE, or languages (Luganda, French, Kiswahili, Arabic).
Frequently Asked Questions: UCE Grades
Why is an aggregate of 8 considered the best possible UCE score? +
Because Distinction 1 is worth 1 point in each subject. Achieving D1 in all 8 counted subjects produces an aggregate of 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8.
Can I get Division 1 with an aggregate of 30 if I don't have a Credit in a Science? +
No. Under UNEB regulations, obtaining Division 1 requires at least one Credit (C6 or better) in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. Without a science credit, the result is classified as Division 2.
Does UCE performance affect university degree cutoff points later? +
Yes. Public Universities in Uganda (Makerere, Kyambogo, MUST, Gulu, Busitema) award 0.3 points per UCE Distinction (D1/D2) and 0.2 points per Credit (C3-C6) when calculating university admissions weighting.
