About the Work Experience Calculator
Recruiters and application forms often ask for total professional experience, but adding several job dates by hand is surprisingly easy to get wrong. This calculator gives you a consistent years, months, and days estimate from up to three employment periods. It is useful when preparing a resume, completing a job portal, checking eligibility for a role, or reviewing how your career history reads on a professional profile.
The result is a planning estimate rather than an official employment record. It adds each role separately, which is useful for a straightforward career timeline. If two roles overlap, the same calendar time is counted twice; that may be appropriate when describing combined experience, but not when an employer asks for elapsed calendar time. Review overlapping dates before submitting an official application.
Why this tool was created
Career histories are increasingly international and flexible. A professional may move between internships, contracts, full-time roles, freelance engagements, and study periods. Different employers also describe experience in years, months, or total days. A transparent date calculator helps applicants prepare an answer and then verify it against contracts, payslips, reference letters, and employment records.
How to use the result
Enter the first and last day you worked when you know them. If you only know the month, choose a reasonable date and label the result as approximate. For a current role, check the current box so the calculator uses today. Add other roles when you want a combined total. For a resume, it is usually clearer to list each employer with its own dates and use the combined total only as a summary.
Technical example
A role from January 15, 2020 to January 14, 2023 is approximately three years. A second role from March 1, 2023 to August 31, 2024 adds about one year and six months. If those dates do not overlap, the combined planning total is about four years and six months, subject to the exact day-count convention used by the employer.
Resume duration questions
Does this count overlapping jobs twice?
Yes. The calculator adds each role as entered. That reflects the total experience across roles, but it is not the same as the number of unique calendar months. Check overlaps when an application asks for elapsed time.
Should internships count as work experience?
That depends on the application and industry. You can calculate them separately, then decide whether to include them based on the employer’s definition and your evidence of responsibilities.
Is the result an official employment calculation?
No. It is a private planning estimate. Confirm dates, leave policies, part-time status, and any required definition with the employer or institution receiving your application.
